The 2001 Soccer Teams of St. Michael's Soccer Club

On June 4, 2001, St. Michael's Soccer Club began its inaugural season. The catalyst behind starting the league was to give those individuals who were not part of a team or knew of anyone in the existing leagues, an opportunity to still play the game of soccer. For the leagues first year, the response was overwhelming as we fielded 8 teams with approximately 150 players in total. Below are pictures of the true stars of St. Michael's Soccer Club. Thank you all for making the 2001 year possible!

"The Boyz"
The Boyz were the winners of the Team Spirit Award for the 2001 season as their conduct both on and off the field exemplified true sportsmanship. Their season got off to a slow start but they gelled nicely towards the end going undefeated in their last 7 games. It should be interesting to see if they are able to continue in 2002 on the same note that they ended.

"Blue Devils"
The Blue Devils turned out to be the "Surprise" team of the 2001 season. The team was plagued with many injuries early in the season and posted only 2 wins during the regular season. However, come playoff time, these guys put on a clinic beating the undefeated Rangers, and juggernauts Sportscentral F.C. and Astech Assault. The championship final match was probably the most exciting game of the season as the Blue Devils, being down 2 -0 at the half, rallied back to score 3 unanswered goals. The Blue Devils are expected to return for the 2002 season and are looking forward to defending their championship title.

"Rangers"
The Rangers posted the best regular season record as they went undefeated for the 2001 campaign. Their defense and goalie proved to be solid throughout the season, allowing opposition, on average, .92 of a goal per game. However, as luck would have it, their first loss of the season came in the first round of the playoffs. The Rangers are expected to return for the 2002 season and have their sights set on defending their regular season championship and hope to steal a certain "Title" that the Blue Devils deservingly won last season.

"Soccercentral F.C."
Soccercentral F.C. established themselves as an offensive powerhouse team throughout the season. They scored 32 regular season goals; the most "Goals For" by any team for the 2001 season. Two of their forwards (Mike Beckles and Sean Galbraith) ended up being 2nd and 3rd, respectively, on the leading goal scoring list. The team debuted with a special appearance by Canadian Soccer Hall of Famer, Bob Lenorduzzi, which proved to be a memorable match of the 2001 season. Soccercentral F.C. is expected to return and will be another team to watch in the 2002 campaign.

" The Junk Yard Boyz"
The Junk Yard Boyz could best be described as the most "Tenacious" team of the 2001 season. These guys never gave up, giving 100% in every game. In two of their regular season games, the team came back from being down by 3 goals. What the team lacked in physical stature, they made up in heart and determination. They were the youngest team of the 2001 season and are only going to get better with time.

"Crimson Tide"
Crimson Tide were the late bloomers of the 2001 season. The team got off to a slow start but ended up playing some solid soccer towards the end of the season, beating and tying some of the top place teams. Their regular season record was not a true reflection of the quality of their game play as they were regarded, by many, as the "Team that could beat any team on any given Sunday."

"Astech Assault"
The Astech Assault proved to be one of the most skilled teams of the 2001 season. They ended up in 3rd place at the end of the regular season and lost a heartbreaking match to the Blue Devils in the Championship Finals. The team was solid in all positions and occupied first place for the majority of the season. They will definitely be a team to watch in the upcoming season.

"Shooting Stars."
The Shooting Stars were a team that gelled nicely towards the middle of the 2001 campaign. They strung together a series of wins about midway through the season and never turned back. They ended up as the League Runner-Ups for the regular season and their 26 "Goals For" proved to be the second best in the regular season. Word has it that the Shooting Stars have been playing in the indoor circuit for the 2001/2002 season and will have definitely turned up their level of play a notch for the 2002 campaign.
